Moved
Moved from Lethocerus.

L. medius
I recently came across a copy of a paper published in 1963 describing the ranges of all Lethocerus species found in North and Central America, and it turns out Lethocerus medius is the only species found in southern Arizona. In fact, southern Arizona is the northern extent of their range. Great find!

Genus Lethocerus
To get you a little closer.

Possible - Lethocerus americanus
Thanks - it looks pretty similar - just the eyes seem slightly different. I found this website had a good explanation. The bugs were attracted to our camp lantern and seemed exhausted when they landed near it. We had no idea that they had a painful bite - glad we avoided that!

Belostomatidae
This is just an educated guess, but it looks to me like a member of the family Belostomatidae (Order: Hemiptera), the Giant water bugs.
