Yellowjacket - Vespula maculifrons

Yellowjacket - Vespula maculifrons
Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
October 24, 2008
Is this Vespula maculifrons? It was in a tree above me, searching through or burrowing into pine needles, and did not offer a full dorsal view to compare to the guide. The yellow ring around the eye is not complete.

V. maculifrons
with this one it is best to do elimination. Well it is not a dolichovespula for sure because of the lack of an oculo-maler space. It does not look like V. vulgaris because it has very few black hairs. from what i can see, the pattern does not look like V. flavopilosa. its definitely not V. squamosa or V. vidua

So, maybe an expert will be able to tell you more, but I'm fairly certain its either a V. maculifrons or V. germanica worker but i cant be completely 100% sure.
