GoldWings/OrangeEyes with Lashes - Magicicada

GoldWings/OrangeEyes with Lashes - Magicicada
Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, USA
June 2, 2008
Size: 1.75" est.
I have taken photos of cicadas before, but I had never noticed their gold wings and orange eyes. In the larger version of this image, one can even see the eyelashes. I took a picture a year ago of a cicada with green wings. The wing pattern is beautiful.

Magicicada
Red eyes are characteristic of the periodical cicada. the "eyelashes" are actually hairs on the top of the head between the eyes.

Brood XIV
of M. septendecim was out in Ohio in 2008. See page 212 of Elliott and Hershberger's "The Song Of Insects," Houghton Mifflin 2007.
