Banded Longhorn - Typocerus velutinus

Banded Longhorn - Typocerus velutinus
Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA
July 1, 2005
Is this flower beetle in the Anoplodera genus or Typocerus genus?

Typocerus
Bill, I feel certain this is a Typocerus; you might want to compare with other Typocerus in the BugGuide. T. velutinus is one to look at.

Anoplodera, by the way, has been deleted by the taxonomists. One of my favorite beetle species was Anoplodera cordifera; it is now Judolia cordifera. Just doesn't have the same ring.

Nice photos!

T. velutina -us
Yes, I think this is T. velutinus (or velutina). I believe that strong pattern is distinctive.

typocerus
Typocerus velutinus is also identified by the elytral markings not being connected along the elytral suture, and by dense, flat lying, goldent pubescence on the elytra. looks like your specimen has it.

Made a mistake
The golden pubescence is on the pronotum, not the elytra, sorry for that typo!

Will move to guide, other Typocerus
Great, I'll move to the guide.

Sounds like you know these critters. I've got some other flower longhorns that I need help on. I'll be posting them in the future, and hope to get your advice.
