Fourth instar - Callosamia promethea

Fourth instar - Callosamia promethea
Denison University Biological Reserve, Licking County, Ohio, USA
July 9, 2005
There are only three of the original four left alive at this point. One decided to take a walk down the stem and into the plant's water supply, then just stayed completely submerged until it drowned (I guess they are not very smart). I've learned from my mistake, and the caterpillars are now unable to get into the jar.

The instar change is obvious, with the front four tubercles changing to red and the smaller black ones becoming reduced.
