Polistes nest still active - Polistes major

Polistes nest still active - Polistes major
Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
November 2, 2008
Active nest in mesquite with no outer covering. One of the wasps...the one on the twig on the left apparantly standing guard. Another wasp hovering close to cells on the sunny side of the nest, maybe to cool off any developing wasps still in the cells? The other individuals mostly in a cluster on the bottom of the nest.

Polistes major castaneicolor
Great shot of the nest!

Thanks
for the information. This species appears less aggressive around the nest than some other species. Would never get that close with yellow jackets or bald-faced hornets.
