hairy dytiscid - Hydroporus niger

hairy dytiscid - Hydroporus niger
Hollis, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
October 27, 2008
Size: about 4.6 mm
This little dytiscid landed on a pine board I had resting horizontally on sawhorses. I put him in my pocket vial and forgot about him till next day, by which time he had expired. I should have put something moist in there with him. Anyway I was quite surprised to see that he was a relative hairball for a water beetle. He/she also has some impressive large solitary whiskers on his/her abdominal tergites, quite odd in my experience.

Thanks for det., Tim.
I'll move it in my files.

no prob.
working through these unIDed pics will be one of my winter assignments , not to mention my own real collection of specimens that I am currently organizing and keying out as well...they go hand in hand :)

Keys to H. niger from Larson (2001)
It was a hard one though and I'm not 100% sure...A closeup showing the dense punctation on the elytra and pronotum (it's somewhat visible in this image) may help confirm.

niger-tenebrosus group
would appear to be from the H. niger-tenebrosus group, but I can't go any further than that. Some of the MCZ types appear to have this single long setae on the abdominal sterna including H. melsheimieri.

There are 16 spp.
on Chandler's list for NH, and not a one appears to be shown on MCZ lecotype image database.
