hairy dytiscid - Hydroporus niger

hairy dytiscid - Hydroporus niger
Hollis, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
October 27, 2008
Size: about 4.6 mm
As I cleaned up various specks and fibers on the underside of this beetle with my PhotoShop clone-stamp tool I realized that some of the fibers were in fact rather stout bristles of impressive length extending from the center of each abdominal tergite. What could these bristles be used for and why, if they are useful, haven't I seen this feature on other beetles?
