SPIDER - Araneus marmoreus

SPIDER - Araneus marmoreus
Muskoka, Ontario, Canada
October 15, 2008
Size: 1/2" approx.
found--mid afternoon--overcast day--air temp. about 45F.
sitting quietly on the forest floor.
alive but not active,
forest is mixture of hard/soft woods
conifers and decid.
What is it???

Total guess
I wonder about Araneus, something like Araneus gemmoides (Cat-Faced Spider)? I won't be shocked if I'm not even close.

We would agree with Araneus
but this reminds us of an old A. marmoreus shrunken after laying her eggs.
