Wolf or Common Grass? - Rabidosa rabida

Wolf or Common Grass? - Rabidosa rabida
Fremont, Sandusky County, Ohio, USA
November 5, 2008
I compared with Wolf and Grass. The markings look like a grass spider, but the body isn't as pointed at the end as a Grass spider. The markings don't look like a Wolf on the body. I tried to get a shot of the eyes.

Wolf Spider
Can you please remove the picture below? The one above is quite good. It looks like something in the genus Rabidosa.

Taxonomy
It does look like the Rabidosa. Looking at the pictures of the Dotted Wolf Spider (Rabidosa punctulata and the Rabid Wolf Spider (rabida) I can't seem to see a difference. What are the distinguishing features?

Do you think it's Rabidosa Rabida?

Thanks!

Distinguishing features for Rabidosa
are described in the revision, and I think there's a link to it on the Rabidosa guide page.

Does look like Rabidosa to me, and I'd like to call it rabida, but I can't see the abdomen markings clearly enough in either photo.

I've only got like three wolf spiders in my collection though, out of the 47 species found in Ohio, and I've keyed out just one of them so far, so I would barely consider myself a novice at this point.

Not sure
It seems there are five choices in the US/Canada. They are Rabidosa carrana, Rabidosa hentzi
Rabidosa punctulata
Rabidosa rabidaâ„¢
Rabidosa santrita

Sure.
Sure.

Another shot

I think
I can maybe make out a little of the pattern on the back. It seems that if the dark stripe down the center abdomen has little tan indents (making a partial chevron pattern) we tend towards R. rabida. Please wait for Jay or another spider expert to confirm.

thanks,
that's perfect.
