Black, brown and orange spider - Araneus marmoreus

Black, brown and orange spider - Araneus marmoreus
New England County, New Hampshire, USA
October 26, 2008
Size: 2-3 cm
Found midday on a warm fall day, hanging onto a dried leaf a few inches above the ground. The leaf was attached by silk to the side of a house, and the spider was spinning around in the wind.

The leaf seems to be pulled closed by silk
Wonder if she is protecting an egg case?? This looks to be a female of Araneus marmoreus. Do you have a more dorsal image? If not Search for that species in the guide pages and compare and see what you think.

I didn't notice the silk on the leaf!
I see it now. I looked at Araneus Marmoreus examples - they are all much more colorful. Is that because they are male? But the patterning is the same. Those were the best two images I got.
