what is this? - Ammopelmatus
Venice, Los Angeles County, California, USA
November 11, 2008
Size: about 2 inches
We found this bug in our retail store. It was squeezing into a small area between a wall and a box. It is very strong because it was actually moving the box. We think it is a burrowing bug because when we brought it outside it immediately found leaves to hide under.
We have never seen an insect like this in the Venice area. We do get product shipments from all over the world, so we thought it may have jumped a ride in a box.

It's a native Jerusalem Cricket
see Stenopelmatus for more information.

Brother can you spare some change?
Apparently they have fallen on hard economic times as well, seems as how they are begging for pennies in the street:-)

...
Very common thoughout Calfornia, seen several in the Bay Area. Guess it homing in the coin due to 'penny radar'. ;)
