Poecilanthrax - Poecilanthrax varius

Poecilanthrax - Poecilanthrax varius
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
October 14, 2005
Size: about 14 mm
I photographed this beefly at Culp Valley on 14 Oct 2008 on a rock on the same day and the same general area of recently submitted image 239353. Both appear to be Poecilanthrax. However, this beefly is much shaggier laterally as well as darker. The wings do not seem as two-toned. Possibly a male-female difference? But, in the Painter and Hall Monograph of Poecilanthrax, this seemed more like P. tegminipennis. BugGuide, though, has an image of P. tegminipennis from Ontario which is quite different. So many lookalikes! Any help sorting these out will be much appreciated.

Moved
I'm fairly sure this is P. varius.

Moved from Poecilanthrax.

Poecilanthrax varius
Thanks so much, Joel, for this identification to species. It is much appreciated.

Poecilanthrax
I haven't had a chance to try to get this to species, but I don't think it's P. tegminipennis. Moved to genus for now.

Poecilanthrax
I just took Hull out of the library, and P. tegminipennis is not shown as occurring in the very SE corner of California. Unfortunately, 15 other species of Poecilanthrax are. Of the six species we've photographed,I've at least tentatively identified five. But not this one.

Poecilanthrax
Thanks, Joel, for checking out this Poecilanthrax. There are so many in the desert that I think are Poecilanthrax and I find them really difficult to tell apart from a photo.
