Size: About 10 mm.
At first I thought that this is a tachinid because of the wide body. After looking at pictures of adult Eristalis tenax, I wonder if that is what it is. The picture was taken about 7 pm on dwarf birch in an area with some stagnant, unpolluted water around.

Interesting. I think it's a tachinid.
Body and antennae don't look syrphid-like, nor does the structure below the wings. If you have a shot showing wing veins, that would say syrphid or not.

If a tachinid, that's probably as good an ID as you'll get, as I've heard they're currently being reclassified. At any rate, the ones with the orangish abdomens are tough to place.
