Arhyssus sp. on Buckwheat - Arhyssus lateralis

Arhyssus sp. on Buckwheat - Arhyssus lateralis
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
May 22, 2005
Size: BL about 6 mm
This very attractive Rhopalid with a pink head and hind femurs seems like an Arhyssus or closely related. It was seen on Buckwheat in Culp Valley on 22 May 2005. Are there any field marks to determine the Arhyssus genus?

Thanks so much, v belov. I'm delighted to have a name for this quite attractive little red Rhopalid.

we both would prefer a species name, i'm sure

Arhyssus sp.
Species names are wonderful, but not easy from photos!

I see you named this one a female. Is that because of the short wings? I have several other brownish ones, some also with short wings, one with wings past the abdomen. The latter is probably a male?

where do you see my mentioning sex??? i haven't

Arhyssus sp
Whoops! My mistake. The title said "Arhyssus sp. female on buckwheat" and I thought you must have put it there. But when I checked back on what I had typed, I was the one who called it a female! Must have been a senior moment--for I never knew its sex. Sorry!
