Ora texana Champion - Ora texana

Ora texana Champion - Ora texana
Bentsen-RGV State Park, Mission, Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
October 17, 2008
Size: ~5 mm
Det. J. H. Epler, 2009

at UV lights just north of the levee...

Moved
oops, ... back to texana. After a review of the original literature on this mess, it is clear that I based my concept of Ora hyacintha Blatchley on mis-ID’d specimens. Any past references I made to Ora hyacintha in Texas are in error.

Moved
Moved from Ora texana.

Moved
Moved from Flea Marsh Beetles.

Ora texana
This is most likely Ora texana - note the faint, apparent 3 transverse bands across the elytra. Coloration in the genus Ora can be somewhat variable, especially in O. troberti, but those 3 bands almost always indicate O. texana.

Scirtidae is one of the most poorly known of the subaquatic beetle families; all the genera are in great need of revision, and it appears that I'm crazy enough to start describing some of the undescribed buggers in Cyphon ... soon ... after I get out of the asylum ... :-)

Ora troberti ??
Thanks for the familial correction. Apparently this is O. troberti and not O. texana per their respective ranges stated in "American Beetles" (1) and a few other references.

Ora texana - FL-GA (??)
Ora troberti - FL, TX

For some reason I'm thinking
Genus Ora, in the Scirtidae. Anybody else?

spectacular! must be Ora indeed

I also was reminded
of Scirtidae due to the (faint) vestiture and the jutting angle of the rear "knees."
