thread waisted wasp - Ammophila nigricans - female

thread waisted wasp - Ammophila nigricans - Female
Delcambre, Iberia Parish, Louisiana, USA
November 14, 2008
Size: 2.8cm
Thread-waisted wasp was found walking about briskly near a freshly dug, one cm hole in the dirt in the late PM. It was not inclined to fly. Looks more like ammophila than podalonia, but hoping for clarification and/or comments.
Thanks,
BD

Note the dark wings of this species.

THANKS for the clarification!
Still curious about the "petiole", which on the guide page suggests that the number of segments distinguishes this from the podalonia genera.
And what feature distinguishes THIS one as a female?
Thanks some more,
B

Small.
The size given seems pretty small for this usually large species. All other characters 'do' point to A. nigricans, though.

SIZE
this wasp's size was about right for the stated size of this type of wasp on the Guide's page: 2.5cm or 25mm.
Still curious was distinguishes it as a female?
