Datana Logic - Datana

Datana Logic - Datana
Mobile (Dog River), Mobile County, Alabama, USA
August 13, 2008
WHEREAS my Datana specimen is nearly nearly identical to D. major, D. ministra, D. drexelii and D. integerrima; WHEREAS my yard is full of azaleas which have been nearly striped by D. major caterpillars;I must conclude that my specimen is a D. major moth.

This sounds logical, but how can someone make a positive ID without knowing the background information? How were the other specific Datanas on Bug Guide ID'd?
Also, there is a gapping hole in my logic - I have not excluded the possibility that there are other Datanas on my property. Will somebody please help me before my brain explodes?
