Collembola - Dicyrtomina minuta

Collembola - Dicyrtomina minuta
Norfolk, Virginia, USA
November 15, 2008
Size: ~1.5-2mm
Found a number of these cute little buggers today under a piece of bark on the forest floor. This species is fairly active and won't stay still to pose for my camera.

Dicyrtomina cf. ornata
The cf. is just a taxonomic-technical matter. D. ornata is currently not recorded from the USA in the taxonomic literature. All such US specimens are currently recorded as Dicyrtomina minuta. But D. minuta is quite a different species as defined by European taxonomists.
One could say that European taxonomists splitted the US taxon D. minuta in separate species while US taxonomists lumped together several European taxa into one taxon...
In summary: D.minuta-US = D.ornata-Eur+saundersi-Eur+minuta-Eur

The cf. is an indication that ornata is currently not (yet) recognised in the US. But work is in progress ;-)

Thanks!
I moved the images to D. ornata.
