I am pretty sure this is a March fly . They always surprise me when they land because they look so different and when they walk they just look like a bad insect such as a Tick . Thanks for any comments ... I only found one in a park in Manteca , sincerely Beth

but I believe you're correct. I think the smallish eyes make this a female.

 
I agree.
Initially thought this might be a scatopsid (minute black scavenger fly, as they look remarkably similar). Moving to family page.
