roughly an inch and a half long. landed near me then promptly flew away.

It looks to be a species of the buprestis genus. With a little more searching I might be able to find the species name for you.

I am sure this must be a Bupr
I am sure this must be a Buprestis confluenta. It has been recorded on cottenwood, poplar and aspen. A great looking specimen.

Cottonwood
Thanks! Cottonwood is certainly the most common tree at this elevation. Makes sense that critters with an appetite for them would be here too.
