Living Mold? - Hypogastrura

Living Mold? - Hypogastrura
Lemoore, Kings County, California, USA
November 26, 2008
Size: Pinhead or smaller
This whatever-it-is appeared last week in a damp area in our yard. It looked like black mold on the ground. Upon further inspection, it appears to be a mass of tiny, living creatures. They are about the size of a pinhead. They appear dull black, but if you use a flash camera they have a whiteness to them. They're extremely tiny (like the period on size 12 type)and cluster together so they look like mold. It rained last night, and some of them moved up onto the sidewalk and are floating on top of puddles (the ones in this photo, for instance). I'll submit another picture from a distance to show how they appear when walking up the sidewalk. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Moved
Moved from Podura aquatica.

Hypogastrura sp.
Podura aquatica is a species bound to ponds or pools of water, so that can be excluded. Hypogastrura is known to form large aggregations of thousands to millions of specimens in damp areas. Family is Hypogastruridae. Migrating Hypogastrura easily get trapped on the surface of water puddles. Due to the meniscus formed on the watersurface by their weight they always tend to glide back to the center of the group.

Yup, springtails
Most likely Podura aquatica (collembola)

No.
These are "springtails," non-insect hexapods in the Class Collembola. Have no idea which family, genus, or species, though, sorry. Contrary to the name, not all springtails can....spring.
