Cecidomyiidae, larvaX in gall - Neolasioptera perfoliata

Cecidomyiidae, larvaX in gall - Neolasioptera perfoliata
Red Oak Prairie, Allamakee County, Iowa, USA
October 10, 2008
Size: 3 mm
I collected (by accident) stem galls on an unknown aster. In Ephraim Porter Felt's "Plant Galls and Gall Makers", pg 326, 327, there are diagrams of 2 aster galls. The collected galls look more like N. albitarsis than N. ramuscula but I'm wondering if there are both types of galls on these plant stems. The stem galls are in a jar and at least one of the larvae was alive and active (now in alcohol). I might try separating the 2 types of galls, if indeed they are different. Perhaps these are neither. Perhaps more can be determined if and when adults emerge.

June 2009: flies and wasps (dead)

Update 2012: I have collected these galls again and the plant is Eupatorium altissimum, tall thoroughwort.

R Gagné says: "Neolasioptera perfoliata (Felt)"

Moved from Unidentified Midge Galls. "Three [Neolasioptera] species have been described from such galls, although these have not yet been critically examined and may actually be one species." (1) I think it's safe to say these are Neolasioptera, but it looks like that's all we can say until a specialist does some more work on the species in question.

Nice!
Don't give up hope. Some images have been IDed to species after sitting for four years at family or order level, like this one. I, too, have some images waiting for a specialist to come around and give us a hand.
