larval home?

larval home?
Lake Rathbun, Appanoose County, Iowa, USA
December 1, 2008
It may be impossible to know for sure, but any idea on who might have made this cute little home. I found about 30 of these on the underside of a rotten log, each of them were about 4 mm in length and were all empty, with one or two holes. They were made of fragile, mudlike substance.

Probably made by
a species of Pompilidae (e.g., Auplopus), but there are other possibilities such as Eumeninae or even some bees if I am not mistaken. The size, however, seems far too small. Are you certain they were only 4 mm long?

measurement error
Ah, I did not have a ruler at the time of that picture. Looking back now at a ruler, I am sure now that it was around 8 to 10 mm.Sorry, big error there.

This sounds plausible.
