Mating Buck Moths - Hemileuca grotei - male - female

Mating Buck Moths - Hemileuca grotei - Male Female
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
November 27, 2008
Size: about 2"
Mating pair taken in a small cactus and Live Oak neighborhood park - they weren't concerned when I moved them with their branch for a better photograph. From looking at other Hemileuca I believe the female is the larger of the two with all the red eyes and the male has the feathery antennae. They don't exactly match any of the recent pictures. What kind are they?

Moved from Hemileuca.

Hemileuca grotei
Looks like Hemileuca grotei, very nice pictures. "All the red eyes" aren't actually eyes, they are just tufts of scales at the base of the leggs, their eyes are black. You are right about which is male and female though.

Thanks, moth guy. It's great to know what they are and what the "false eyes" really are. My usual insect photographs are butterflies which can be viewed at http://tdaustin.com/ a long term project started about 3 years ago.
Kind regards, Tim
