Bordered Plant Bugs Largus - Largus

Bordered Plant Bugs Largus - Largus
Sunset State Beach, Monterey Coast, Monterey County, California, USA
June 28, 2008
Size: 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch
These beetles were in great abundance around our campsite. I probably shouldn't call them beetles, they don't seem to have wings. They were quite camera shy, which made getting a decent image difficult. They look amazing though. Their shells have almost a mirror finish to them. Any idea what they may be?
