Bee-like fly - Milesia virginiensis

Bee-like fly - Milesia virginiensis
Powhatan County, Virginia, USA
July 13, 2005
Size: About 1inch
Does anyone know the species? - Thanks

Milesia, perhaps?
To my untrained eye it looks like one of the Milesias in this page. Wait for one of the experts to tell you more.
By the way, I am curious, what kind of flowr is that?

Milesia virginiensis
This one's distinctive--there are only two eastern species--see the guide page for the genus for discussion and links. They are out quite commonly down here just a little south of Virginia, in North Carolina.
