I photographed this wasp in Palm Canyon, just after sunrise. The morning was cool and the wasp was still sleeping. I think I have it identified to Genus, can anyone help me with the species?

Yes, Ammophila
species id difficult though due to large # of species in the genus..don't know whether we have an expert here...

Thanks, Tim. I'll hope for the expert, Calif. does seem too have a lot of Ammophilas.

What an interesting pose! Is that really how they sleep? Its' pose looks like an animal dying from a fungus.

 
Sleep Pose
Yes, I have seen other hymenopterans sleep like this. I photographed some solitary bees, possibly squash bees, that hang from their mandibles with their legs tucked up.
