Aphonopelma species
It could possibly be A. chalcodes, but species identification in this genus is really difficult, especially for males. The only sure way for an ID is to look at them under a scope.

It is turning out that morphological characters used in the past are not holding with a lot of species. This is especially true with many species described by Smith. There is some very interesting things going on with these "black tarantulas". Especially in SE AZ.

Awesome!
Great to hear some work is being done on this genus. Do you know who is doing the research and if any papers have been published yet?

Last I heard, Smith was working on a digital, updated version of his '95 publication.

What was the habitat and elevation?

This was located at about 3600 feet, in township 17 south range 12 east, section 10, approximately 5.5 miles west of I-19 and 12.5 miles south of State Route 86. The surrounding habitat is technically in the semidesert grassland biotic community, but basically the washes were dominated by catclaw acacia and tended to be grassy while the uplands tended to be more open with more cactus.
