Collembola - Pogonognathellus flavescens

Collembola - Pogonognathellus flavescens
Norfolk, Virginia, USA
December 16, 2008
Size: ~3mm (body)
Found in leaf litter on a piece of wood debris (bark). Images were underexposed, so not very good quality.

This springtail moved about very slowly, like it was very old.

Probably. The antennae are deformed. This might be the reason why the specimen moved so slowly. The antennae bear most of the sensilla. To touch and to smell and to taste. Without sufficient sensilla the specimen is quite unable to scan its environment, so it has to be carefull.

Thanks for the ID
The area that I collected this springtail from was recently sprayed with herbicide. I wonder if that was a factor. Other isopods and a centipede or two collected from the same area seemed ok.
