Silphid larvae

Silphid larvae
University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire, USA
October 2, 2008
Size: 1-1.5cm?
I found two of these (these photos are of the same individual) while walking along the side a road along a dorm building. Didn't find where they were coming from. When I handled one of them it tried chewing on my skin (not painful at all, actually rather amusing.)

Perhaps they used up their food source too early & were searching for more?
