Brown Worm-like Bug - Image1 (top of bug) - Hermetia illucens

Brown Worm-like Bug - Image1 (top of bug) - Hermetia illucens
Davidson County, North Carolina, USA
December 18, 2008
Size: 1/2 inch approx.
These started showing up on my kitchen floor this week. I find one or two in the middle of the floor at a time - they sort of crawl very slowly. They curl up a bit and "play dead" when I pick them up with a napkin. What are they, where do they come from and how are they getting into my house? Please help - thanks!

Stratiomyidae
It looks like the larva of Hermetia illucens - Black Soldier Fly. They are commonly associated with wet, organic situations. Look for a leaking pipe under the sink, or some other possible source of moisture. They may be making their way into the home looking for someplace warm in the winter.

thank you so much!
I have looked at pictures on the internet for days and could not figure out what this was. We did have a leak under the kitchen sink recently. I guess we will have to take another look under there. Thank you so much for your help!
