Orussus occidentalis female - Orussus occidentalis - female

Orussus occidentalis female - Orussus occidentalis - Female
Port Williams Beach, Sequim, Clallam County, Washington, USA
May 15, 2008
This photo was identified by Lars Vilhelmsen, Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, as a female O. occidentalis.
Diagnostic characters include:
• red abdomen (O. occidentalis vs. O. thoracis in my area
• thickened end of the antennae, which the females use to tap the surface of logs

BTW, a better photo showing the thickened antennae of a female (I think) of a different species here:

Much better photos and videos at my ONH Orussus page.
