Southern Dogface - Zerene cesonia - female

Southern Dogface - Zerene cesonia - Female
Tahlequah, Cherokee County, Oklahoma, USA
July 7, 2006
Not sure if male or female.

female
The males have a more solid border, particularly on the hind wing. Usually the abdomen is fatter on females, but on dried ones they often shrink, and one has to look at the genitalia to be sure, if going by structure alone. On Sulphurs the pair of claspers of the males are quite visible at the tip of the abdomen below, and are absent on the females.

She is sure a pretty thing, too bad the wing is nicked.
