Short-winged Conehead - Neoconocephalus triops - female

Short-winged Conehead - Neoconocephalus triops - Female
Mobile County, Alabama, USA
December 3, 2008
Size: 30mm (body)
Can someone help me with the species of this conehead?

Referenced to a 1" OD water hose, this conehead has 30mm body length & 20mm ovipositor length. The ovipositor is approximately the same length as the hind femur. The shape and aspect ration of the cone (length:width=3:2) eliminates most but N. caudellinus and N. velox from Capinera (1), p.170.

Both the Caudell's and the swift range on the Gulf Coast. However, from Capinera's description, the short-winged cattail seems a possibility (70% of Cattails are short-winged). Only problem with that ... cone on my specimen looks too wide.

Hopefully, this more detailed keys will help ID my conehead. As it is, I can't even place at genus, as the Cattail is not a Neoconocephalus.

Probably Conocephalus
a meadow katydid..and it's a female (from the swordlike ovipositer)

No.
I respectfully disagree. This is a nymph of one of the true coneheads, though I'm not even certain which genus. The downcurved ovipositor might be a clue....Update: I feel confident this is a nymph of N. triops. Nice images, and nice addition to the guide page for that species.
