Went on a walk around the neighborhood and found a ton of these things along the side of the road.

We will tie them out in various bushes around the yard.

Probably Chinese mantis.
These look to be ootheca of the Chinese mantis....Remember they are highly cannibalistic as nymphs, so it might be overkill to put so many in your yard:-)

 
I think you are right
They seem to be the most common in my area...

Yeah I've had experience with the way they cannibalize each other.. My biology teacher actually kept a whole bunch of hatchlings in the same cage and wondered where they all went

We will try to spread these out around the yard.
