Ummidia - male

Ummidia - Male
Conway, Faulkner County, Arkansas, USA
July 18, 2005
Size: >35mm
This is almost certainly a very large and fresh Trap Door spider in the Ummidia. This genus is apparently still badly in need of work. U audouini is the one that is supposedly widespread in the southeast. Supposedly it has brown legs by the classic Kaston description. This thing, as you can see is so black it is shining. The other trap door genus here is Bothriocyrtum but this appears wrong for that genus. I believe you can see the Ummidia saddle-shape on the third leg in this shot. Seems to be a male but, wow, it was big for a male.
