The insect was found crawling on a sidewalk on a winter day (30degreesF) in Northern Indiana. It was very active and difficult to photograph. It would occasionally pull its legs close to its body and freeze- a defensive posture perhaps- but it never stayed that way long enough for me to get a good pic. I think those are claspers on the end of its abdomen, which would mean it's a male, but they weren't as distinct as the claspers in other photos I've seen.
