Size: 1/4 inch (less legs)
The insect was found crawling on a sidewalk on a winter day (30degreesF) in Northern Indiana. It was very active and difficult to photograph. It would occasionally pull its legs close to its body and freeze- a defensive posture perhaps- but it never stayed that way long enough for me to get a good pic. I think those are claspers on the end of its abdomen, which would mean it's a male, but they weren't as distinct as the claspers in other photos I've seen.

Yes I found BugGuide through What's That Bug. I scoured the web and contacted a few entomologists before I finally found out what this is. I didn't even know what order to check. So I thought I'd post it in as many places as I could. I also sent it to Dr. Young- a crane fly expert, apparently. Anyway, I like your pics. Check out more of my mine at:
