Size: 25mm
A large beetle, very fond of .. poop. Imagine sitting on a stool in the middle of a busy trail at a popular forest preserve, intently taking pictures of.. poop. They don't see the beetle, no! Argh.

Necrophila americana
This looks like Necrophila americana, the American Carrion Beetle. Even more fond of old rotten roadkill than it is of poop, though last year I found one inside one of our Jack-o-lanterns that we left out a little too far past Halloween....
