Size: approximately 1.5"
We think this might be the same species as photo #247493. This is a different individual but in approximately the same location.

Wow.
Might be Polistes major? I collected something very similar in Arizona this year (didn't know it, either, until I went to pin it), so I'll be curious what Matthias Buck says.
