Ophion-like wasp - Ophion

Ophion-like wasp - Ophion
Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, Canada
May 6, 2008
This wasp was photographed and then collected on the morning of 6 May 08. I had been speculating on our local NatureNB listserv about the identity of the "ophion-like" wasps that were fairly common at lights during the spring, and I had suggested that someone should take a specimen. I took the specimen to my workplace, the Canadian Forest Service - Atlantic Forestry Centre, where I work as an editor/whatever. It lay about in a freezer for several months until it was sent to Ottawa for id, along with numerous others of a different nature. Today I learned that it was identified as "Ophion sp." by Andy Bennett of Agriculture Canada, a wasp expert. He was not able to id it any further.

So, this ids, at least to genus, one of the "ophion-like" wasps that have appeared at my front porch (of which I have several images). There may be several species coming to the lights, but it looks as if their identity will remain a mystery.

Agree...
In this case, Andy is correct that this is an ichneumon wasp in the subfamily Ophioninae, but one should keep in mind that some ichnenumon subfamilies (e.g. Tryphoninae) have strikingly similar characteristics to Ophion. Fortunately, they can be easily distinguished by wing venation as is the case here. Good work.
