Climber

Climber
Stougton, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
December 28, 2008
Size: Dime or smaller
This bug seemed to like to climb. I was moving into an older house and 2 different ones climbed my cd case when I moved it into a basement office. A third climbed a tv tray table. I haven't seen anymore since 12/28/08 when the picture was taken. The picture is on hardwood floors. The house was unoccupied for at least a month or two when we moved in.

Capniidae
I'm not sure how they got into your house, but adult stoneflies are short-lived and these must have recently emerged from a nearby stream or spring seep. A late December emergence indicates that they are probably one of the "winter" stonefly genera, and the visible tails (cerci) would place them as Capniidae. They are rather poor fliers, but very active climbers.

The stream
There is a stream about 200 to 300 yards behind the house. There are also rain water drains on the street in the neighborhood that empty into it marked for "no dumping" as they empty into the freshwater stream. Maybe they traveled up one of those. The basement overall is very dry. The room I found them in however is finished and seems like it could have gotten some water under the floors. That must be how they came in. It seems a shame to tear up the floor but I may have to have a look. It may be possible that they hitched a ride inside while we were moving stuff in as well. Thanks for the info!
