Leaf beetle larva (Chrysomelidae)
I suspect subfamily Galerucinae, but I'm not qualified to say for certain. These are highly host-specific, as with many plant-feeding larvae, so knowing the host plant could help reach a more specific ID.

 
Flea Beetle larva?
Looks similar to these images:

 
Altica seems right.
It's skinnier and brown, like the one I photographed.

 
Other galerucines
look very similar to me--see viburnum leaf beetle, for instance.

Viburnum leaf beetle larva seems a bit more yellow - like this one at Forestry Images. But I am sure that you are correct - there may be several other species that look similar.

Whatever kind of leaf beetle it is, it certainly looks like a threat to leaves! I would guess this was an oak leaf.
