This is probably a species of Ixodes. I have a picture of I. marxi in another squirrel's ear. This one is darker.

Looks more like a
Dermacentor variabilis female, I think.

 
Could be one
I see the resemblence but the online sources I checked require either a look at the underside or a closer view than I have here to see the diagnostic features. I don't know how good general appearance is in identifying ticks.
