Found in dry sandy habitat in NW Colorado. This red velvet ant is somewhat smaller than the orange Dasymutilla creusa.

Red Velvet Ant
I believe that I have found one of these ants in South Jersey! If they don't leave Colorado...why is he/she here!? It's body is hard; I tried to smush it with a paper towel, and I could feel that it was hard like a shell. I took a picture that I could send if you could please help me. Are these ants harmful to people or my home?
