Mosquito - Anopheles punctipennis - female

Mosquito - Anopheles punctipennis - Female
Ackworth, Warren County, Iowa, USA
January 16, 2009
Size: 9 mm (excluding legs)
Lone individual attracted to desk lamp in dim room. It has been extremely cold outside the last two days (-12 to -18 degrees F at dawn), so it must have come from within a warmer part of my old farmhouse. Seems to be near death, kept flipping into its back whenever I tried to get a dorsal view. Edge of penny in first photo provides scale.

Looks like Anopheles punctipennis, a mosquito. The females overwinter in protected areas, but if it is too warm, they will die before spring comes.

Dorsal photo added
Thanks, Sean! In reading the information for A. punctipennis, I see that the wing pattern is needed, so I took another photo after finally flipping it over for a dorsal view today. (It spent the whole day immobile on my desk, finally expiring there this evening.) I see the pale subcostal spot.
