Snow Flea, 2:58pm
Elk Island NP, Alberta, Canada
January 17, 2008
Quite an intresting day, normally seeing 0 winter insects I saw at least 2 this time. I saw many other black dots around the trail, but they were just soil, and you had to look at them really closely to see them move, almost camoflauge there.

Isotomidae
Snow fleas is a general term for springtails that are active on snow fields. The term covers 2 groups of springtails. One group are Hypogastruridae such as Hypogastrura nivicola with short legs and antennae. The other group are Isotomidae such as the pictured specimens with longer legs and antennae. Genus probably Isotoma or Desoria.
