Buprestid - Acmaeodera latiflava

Buprestid - Acmaeodera latiflava
Near Devil's Punchbowl Co. Park, south of Pearblossom, Los Angeles County, California, USA
May 5, 2008
This Buprestid was found near the southern edge of the Mojave Desert, at 3780 feet elevation, just a mile or two north of the steep, forested, north-facing slopes of the San Gabriel Mnts. It was on flowers of an unusually robust specimen of Syntrichopappus fremontii, a desert annual in the Asteraceae. I'm not sure whether it was feeding on pollen, floret tissue, or both...many ray florets appeared heavily munched.

It looks very similar to Acmaeodera latiflava, which Dennis mentions bores into the dry flower stalks of Joshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia). There were definitely Joshua Trees in the vicinity.
