Brochymena - Brochymena sulcata

Brochymena - Brochymena sulcata
Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, USA
September 18, 2008
These live on my lilac bush and I submitted an immature last year to the Guide. I was wondering if the blob underneath this insect might be an egg case. I understand it is supposed to be barrel-shaped. Maybe it's just bird doo.

That would be the latter....
Bird doo-doo it is. Brochymena do not have egg 'cases,' and probably not even clusters. I think females deposit eggs individually in bark crevices.

Thanks, Eric.
Thanks for the info. After hanging around Bugguide for the past few years, I look at bird doo-doo a little more closely. No telling when it will turn into an insect.
